In the first chapter, Mrs. Jewls and her class of third graders go on a field trip to visit some animals at the zoo. They are warned not to feed any of the animals because they might get sick from eating too much sugar. One of the students, however, does not listen and feeds a monkey a lot of sugar cubes. The monkey gets very sick and dies soon after.
