Health Canada Overview
Health Canada is the Federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health. We do this by promoting healthy living, and by providing leadership and advice on food, drugs, health products, pesticides and environmental issues.
We are also responsible for regulating therapeutic products such as prescription drugs, medical devices, biologics and natural health products. Our goal is to ensure that these products are safe and effective for Canadians.
Our work includes:
-conducting research on the causes of disease and injury;
-monitoring the safety of foods, drugs, health products and pesticides;
-providing information to Canadians about healthy living and protecting themselves from risks to their health;
-evaluating the effectiveness of our programs;
-regulating therapeutic products such as prescription drugs, medical devices, biologics and natural health products;
-licensing manufacturers of these products;

Health Canada’s First Nations and Inuit Health Branch
The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of Health Canada is responsible for promoting the health and well-being of First Nations people and Inuit communities. The FNIHB works with provincial and territorial governments, as well as other federal departments and agencies, to develop and deliver programs and services that address the unique health needs of these populations.
The branch also works to increase access to quality health care for First Nations and Inuit communities, by supporting the development of community-based primary care services, as well as culturally appropriate prevention and wellness programs. In addition, the FNIHB provides funding to support the delivery of health care services on reserves and in Inuit regions.
